BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS DRAMA CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK – 18/19

Goal – To develop our children in the 4 BYT Competency areas of Confidence, Communication, Creativity and Critical Thinking*. These core skills are developed through drama to build emotional intelligence and wider soft skills essential for long term success. The BYT Team of Leaders and Facilitators track performance against each key competency throughout each term to reach desired level appropriate to age.

Bright Young Things Drama 18/19 Theme: Dreams

LITTL’UNS (3-5 yr olds)

KEY CHILD DEVELOPMENT AREAS (Child Development Institution LLC 2017)

  • Exploring emotional spectrum – understanding anger and humour.
  • First signs of pride, responsibility and competitiveness.
  • 200 – 600 words.
  • Intense curiosity.
  • Need for group creative play with peers and adults.
  • Dependency on family
TERM 1 - AUTUMN

FOCUS OF THE TERM: Imagination and exploration

Refine core skills for working in and expressing yourself in a group.

Explore the world of dreams, our
own and those created in classic
stories such as Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland.

TERM 2 - WINTER

FOCUS OF THE TERM: Show Term – Producing and Performing

Using rehearsal, repetition and
structure to turn our theme of Dreams into a piece of Theatre through individual and whole group acting, singing, dancing and a whole range of theatre techniques.

Perform a showcase in front of an audience and receive feedback

TERM 3 - SPRING

Dates: 29th Apr – 23rd June Output: Open House Workshop BYT Celebration Ceremonies

FOCUS OF THE TERM: Masterclasses

Building on skills developed from
performance term, we will act out characters from dream worlds and go on fantastical adventures with our Littl’uns as the author and director.

Masterclasses from new specialist disciplines such as costume design, sign language and circus skills.

TERM 4 - SUMMER SCHOOL

Dates: 1st July – 23rd August

Output: End of Camp Showcase

FOCUS OF THE TERM: Producing and Performing

An intensive week of drama and acting, exploring the full spectrum of creative arts combined to perform a spellbinding showcase of the work in which you have had full creative input.

MIDDL’UNS (6 – 9 yr olds)

KEY CHILD DEVELOPMENT AREAS

  • Stage of stabilized progress – starting to become familiar with themselves
  • Need for independent thought and choices – leading to frustrations and self discipline
  • First awareness of strengths & weaknesses
  • Fluent speech and an eagerness to describe and express
  • Fine and gross motor skills
  • Need for relationships outside of family
TERM 1 - AUTUMN

FOCUS OF THE TERM: Imagination and exploration

Refine key skills of collaboration,
negotiation and working in a group creatively.

Stimulate imagination around the theme of Dreams by bringing your dreams through our well loved BYT story book.

Use BYT BIG QUESTIONS and
frozen image to explore what our dreams mean and what we ‘dream’ of being when we grow up.

  • Need to comment on and explore the world outside their personal perspective
  • Move from black and white to an awareness of shades of grey in matters
  • Growing sense of achievement and personal identity

Build group dynamic through trust activities and opportunity for whole group and small group devising and debate.

Explore how our dreams for the
future have changed and still change and who and what informs our aspirations.

physical theatre to debate and
explore the pros and cons of having big dreams.

Big’uns will create a dream collage of their life in 10 years’ time and explore through role play how they can make their dreams come true.
